A high quality wine deserves to be served in wine glasses of exceptional quality. It is important to care for them properly. But just how do you do that?

No vintner who cares for their reputation can allow themselves to neglect the cleanliness of their vats, wine tanks, hoses or pumps. The same rules should also be followed when handling good wines at home. Wine glasses especially should get a good amount of attention. Dirt and residue may cloud, quite literally, your enjoyment of a good wine.

Even Expensive Wine Glasses Can Go In The Dishwasher

You can put any wine glass in your dishwasher, but it is important to follow a few simple rules:

  • Immediately after the dish washing portion is over, open the dishwasher and let the steam escape.
  • Then, take your time rinsing the glasses to get rid of residue. You can do this either in the dishwasher or manually. Do avoid using a rinsing agent that has its own specific aroma!
  • Finally, dry the glasses using a fresh, unused towel. An already used towel that has been wet and allowed to dry will transfer a stuffy odour to the glass.

Don’t Store Wine Glasses Upside Down

Many people store glasses in a cupboard upside down – ostensibly to keep dust from entering the glass. What you’re actually doing is trapping air that gets stuffy. That stuffiness transfers to the surface of the glass. A quick rinse, followed by good drying before using a glass is a much better way to store your wine glasses.

And do you use a decanter for your red wines? There’s an easy way to descale it and get rid of discolouration. Fill the decanter with warm water and add 1 or 2 denture tablets. Leave standing overnight and rinse properly – your decanter will be good as new!
